Following last year’s successful pioneering effort, the Rotaract Club of Taylor's College Subang Jaya collaborated with Taylor’s Reading Bus to organize a Classroom Xperience to bring a rewarding educational experience to underprivileged children. In a collaboration between Rotaract Club, LEO Club, WACKY Club and the Free Arts Movement Club Of Taylor’s College, this year’s event sought to build upon lessons learned last year. Inspired by Akanksha Foundation’s Classroom Mumbai, this year’s non-profit event offered orphaned children a wholesome and fun education in subjects such as dance and simple handicrafts, as well as classes in literacy and communication skills.
Yap Pei Ru, the organizing chairperson of the event, explains that, “Education is the seed we have sown today, and we anticipate a tree of literacy sprouting in the near future.” Specially tailored to create aspirations for children who have yet find an aim in their lives, the event’s theme this year was ‘Reach As We Teach.’ “We are a privileged minority who have been given the chance for an education comprising of top notch academics and external skill developments since we were young. We are very much obliged to give back to society something for all they have given us,” added Pei Ru.
“This Classroom Xperience 2014, founded on compassion, love, tolerance, and equality, irrespective of social background, acted as the fundamental platform for college students like us. We need to step out of our comfort zones and broaden our knowledge, showcase our skills, and share what we have learned with the underprivileged children who are living in orphanages. We really hope that these children we have tried to teach will someday have the opportunities we have had, and share their knowledge to the larger community as they grow up. Together with these children, we believe that we can reach out further, enlightening one another with education.”
Contemplating the success of this event, Ms. Yap had some final thoughts. “I want to express our sincere gratitude and acknowledge the pioneer committee members who sparked this initiative last year. We also want to thank the external stakeholders and generous financial sponsors who funded this project, the school administrators and teachers who helped us, and the Student Development Centre who was always there for us. I also want to thank the ever dedicated and passionate committee members, mentors and volunteer teachers for staging this wonderful event for the children.
